Morley Cigarettes belong to one of my favorite categories of fictional things: prop brands that get reused in multiple movies and TV shows, sometimes for years. Morleys appeared in Psycho and episodes of the Twilight Zone long before they became Cigarette-Smoking Man’s brand. The X-Files made them high-profile enough that other productions started to avoid using them (similarly, Lost absolutely killed longtime fictional airline Oceanic Airlines), but you still see them from time to time.

For a second I read that as “…appeared in Psych” and I was seriously confused about timelines.
This is a classic X-Files in the “bonkers idea” category, where they take a tenuous one-line premise that somebody floated in a writer’s room one time and just go balls to the wall with it. My favorite bit is after a bunch of over-the-top gore and weirdness, they close with a somber implied musing that maybe Mulder is now smoking LIKE HIS DAD DOES?!? sort of like Luke mournfully regarding his cybernetic hand at the end of “Empire Strikes Back” except way sillier.

I feel that Gillian Anderson is right about the hair, but you’ve got to love those tiny FBI badges.
