These MotW comics make me happy- you do such a great job on them and I get to have fun flashbacks to my XPhile days. (And the nitpicking is SPOT. ON. It’s like when I watch movies/shows set in New Orleans. There are side-eye moments…)
This episode would never get made now. Fox (the company) would be to scared of making some Chinese investors unhappy.
Anyway, thanks for the strip, it’s always great to nitpick about shows that have places or characters from where one lives (in my case: the “Chileans” from Breaking Bad).
I can tell you with absolute certainty that aside from the helicopter shot of Lakeshore Drive, absolutely NOTHING about the John Cusack classic “Grosse Pointe Blank” has anything to do with any of the five Grosse Pointes. At all. Seriously. Really fun movie, but come on.
(Yes, there are five cities sharing the name “Grosse Pointe”, they are: Grosse Pointe Shores, Grosse Pointe Farms, Grosse Pointe Park, Grosse Pointe, and Grosse Pointe Woods.)
Also, the city in “RoboCop” has nothing at all to do with Detroit whatsoever, BUT the almost universally derided Dan Aykroyd movie “Doctor Detroit”, if memory serves, was actually shot in Detroit and the surrounding area.
I can say such things with certainty because I live in a small suburb called Eastpointe (which is about a mile west of Grosse Pointe Woods/Farms/Shores and a couple miles north of Grosse Pointe Park and the City of Grosse Pointe) and have lived in the area all my life.
I’m the same way: Criminal Minds has done several episodes in Oklahoma (Oklahoma City, Enid and Durant. Yes, I remember them!) Not a ONE was even remotely like what Oklahoma really is! Hello, Durant does NOT have a public transit system!
this might be taking things too far just to join in, but it *is* based in truth, so…
I live in the City of Townsville and it is nothing like how it is shown in The Power Puff Girls
Yes, seriously.
1) it doesn’t snow here
2) when Fuzzy Lumpkins^ beat Mr Mayor^ in the election, Mr Mayor^ had a unsuccessful go a federal politics and eventually left politics. Fuzzy^ was re-elected mayor at least twice (I think) but retired at the last election.
3) The City of Townsville is actually in Australia
4) we don’t have that may tall buildings
etc etc etc
^ yes, I’m serious – ok, I’ve changed the names *but* the long long looooooooong time Townsville mayor *was* beaten by the challenger from the ‘rural’ parts :-p
I couldn’t help but roll my eyes at their attempts to make Hell Money (as in, the actual joss paper, not the episode) sound more spookier than it should be.

MotW/Skin Horse crossover time?
Ahh, nitpicking the setting…

Oooh, no cemeteries. I’ve never noticed that before.
“Actual joke used in this episode”, heh. Sometimes you can’t beat the humour, you can only comment on it. 🙂
Actually, there are two cemeteries in San Francisco: Mission Dolores and San Francisco National (aka Presidio)
Yeah, but you can’t bury anyone new at Mission Dolores, and the Presidio is a strictly for veterans.
There’s also a pet cemetery.
And who wants to be buried / in a pet cemetery?
I don’t wanna live my life again.
Long Live Norton I!
Yes! Props for the Emperor Norton ref.
Indeed!
I knew that was supposed to be Jason Shiga, even without the Jimmy. As his work is pretty brilliant, I would like to read this minicomic.
So would that getup behind him be the Shiga Shack?
…don’t kill me?
BTiLC ref ftw!
I can’t decide if panel 6 makes me want to read more or fewer Jason Shiga books, apart from the one I’ve already read.

I’ll try to keep that in mind.
I lived in Northern VA when the show was on so I was constantly nitpicking the setting. Too funny (and maybe a little sad) now that I look back on it.
