Andrew says my emergency-room panel reads like a MAD Magazine gag, but I think I hewed pretty close to the actual scene. Scully just keeps pumping electricity into that guy until he lights up like Coney Island.
According to Wikipedia, the actor who played the possessed ex, Christopher Allport, died in 2008 in an avalanche. Seriously. He was also Slimy Pete’s disapproving dad in “Mad Men.”
I look forward to the strip every week. Keep going!
I think “Lazarus” was a pretty OK episode. Scully in danger is always a good thought, because it makes Mulder worry.
Thanks again for the laughs, shaenon.
The other thing about this episode is the pounding minor-key soundtrack. It’s like a bite-sized Christopher Nolan movie.
Poor Scully! LOL! Can’t wait till next Friday!
I am loving your take on the X-Files. It’s like it’s the mid-90s all over again.
Mulder’s crazy eyes whenever he says ALIENS are a thing of beauty.
Here’s my favorite post-Vatican-II artsy-fartsy guitar-mass song. If you’re Scully, you can expiate your Catholic guilt to it. If not, it’s got a beat and you can dance to it. (Okay, interpretive dance, but still . . .)
tune: “I am the Resurrection and the Life,” David Graham
I have been resurrected!
Where’s my wife?
Well grab the loot and then take off on the run
I have been resurrected
Got new life
I’ve got a new body, and he’s got a gun
Not so fast! I don’t need some strange dude
I will cap your ass, although that’s rude
You’re cuffed, and so, this joint I will blow!
Kay, that’s great. Shaenon, this is as fantasmic as always, and really drives home the point that they had no idea where the series should go, so all of season 1 is pretty much ‘repeat pilot so audience knows what is going on’.
I’m late to the party, as usual:
Looks like comments are closed on s1ep12, but I just wanted you to know that your reference to Wax’s “California” music video did not go unnoticed or unappreciated. Flame suit, indeed.
You inspired my to look up the video for California (www.youtube.com/watch?v=Px_3MerNhgQ). One of Spike Jonze’s coolest, hottest videos.
Oh, and I also looked up the “death neg” comment, which I didn’t understand. I found a whole online community of “pick-up artists,” and an Urban Dictionary definition of “neg” which includes that line about the fingernails. There are whole worlds about which I am blissfully ignorant.
Scully in her happy place during a shootout: this is not an entirely unfair characterization. There’s one episode — “Aubrey?” — where she’s visibly frustrated that she can’t shoot someone. Dana Scully: medical doctor, theoretical physicist, and she will cap you. As Mulder will discover.
