Obviously the best part of this episode is the nerdy computer guy whose name sounds suspiciously like “Wozniak” and his very dated hacking lingo.
I love haunted house stories; my favorite horror novel is The Haunting of Hill House and my favorite horror movie is The Shining, which is basically just The Haunting of Hill House with more furries. But for some reason I have trouble getting into stories about evil computerized houses, even though it’s the same concept. Computers just aren’t as scary as ghosts. All they can do is drop an elevator on you. They can’t make the elevator fill with a hundred gallons of ghost blood.
wait wait even x-files did “evil computer”? I thought they were better than that.
Mulder and Scully’s other friends in the FBI kind of suck, don’t they?
I sense that one of the writers on the show had recently read Steven Levy’s ‘Hackers’. Though it would have been even better if the geeky hacker had an elaborate toy train set running through his house.
yes it’s like anybody in starfleet higher than Captian.
>>>But for some reason I have trouble getting into stories about evil computerized houses, even though it’s the same concept.
That’s because the only reason to invent the computerized house concept is to give the story rational plausibility. But evil computers is completely stupid and depending on how well you know computers (and *everybody* knows *something* about computers) you can actually see the seams where the story goes idiotic.
Haunted house stories don’t need no stinkin’ rationale. They’re creepy in themselves. Although, I confess I don’t care for haunted house stories myself. But I don’t think they are idiotic.
I’m loving these. I hope you’ll keep going. The show doesn’t really come into it’s own until at least the 2nd season.
This is one of the most tedious episodes of all the show. One of the worst. I have to say that the first season has some episodes I dislike. I think one of the others is Space. Soooooo boooooooooriiiiiiiing….
Season one isn’t certainly one of my favorite seasons although there is one of the best episodes ever: Ice.
I started to see the show from the third or fourth season. I don’t know what would happen If I had watched it from the beginning ahahahaha.
The thing I liked the most in this episode was Scully crawling in the ventilation ducts and trying to shoot trough the fan while she was hanging. There’s a Lot of action for Scully in some episodes ahahahaha.
Shirley Jackson was the best, oh yeah! Have you seen the movie version of The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting (1963 B&W version, not the 1999 regurgitation). An excellent example of understated, psychological horror.
“Computers just aren’t as scary as ghosts. All they can do is drop an elevator on you. They can’t make the elevator fill with a hundred gallons of ghost blood.”
What kind of computers do you have that can’t generate a measly hundred gallons of ghost blood?
